Does Metal Roofing Attract Lightning?

Does Metal Roofing Attract Lightning? | Honest Abe Roofing

When homeowners consider upgrading to a metal roof, one of the most common concerns we hear at Honest Abe Roofing is: “Won’t a metal roof attract lightning?” It’s an understandable question-after all, metal conducts electricity. But the truth might surprise you: metal roofing does not increase the likelihood of a lightning strike.

Let’s break down the facts.

Lightning Doesn’t Choose Based on Material

Lightning is attracted to the highest point in an area, not the material of the roof. It’s looking for the fastest path to the ground, which usually means tall structures, trees, or utility poles. Whether your roof is made of asphalt shingles, wood, or metal, its composition does not make it a more likely target.

Why Metal Roofs Are Actually Safer

While a metal roof doesn’t attract lightning, if a strike were to occur, metal offers an important safety benefit: it’s non-combustible.

Fire Resistance: Unlike wood shakes or certain shingles, metal roofing won’t ignite if struck by lightning.

Conductivity & Dissipation: Metal efficiently conducts electricity, which helps dissipate the energy of a strike safely into the ground when properly grounded.

This makes metal roofing one of the safest options in severe storms.

Additional Benefits of Metal Roofing

Aside from lightning safety, metal roofing is known for:

Durability: It can last 40-70 years with proper maintenance.

Weather Resistance: Excellent protection against wind, hail, and heavy rain.

Energy Efficiency: Reflective coatings can reduce cooling costs.

A metal roof from Honest Abe Roofing will not increase your risk of a lightning strike-and in fact, it can make your home safer during severe weather. If you’re considering upgrading to a metal roof, you can do so with confidence knowing it provides durability, energy savings, and peace of mind.
