Metal Roof vs Asphalt Roof Replacement

If this is your first time in the market for a new roof, you may be surprised to find out that there are far more options available to homeowners now than there were years ago. And while it may be tempting to just stick with the type of roof you previously had, there may be an even better option out there.

Roofs are your home’s first line of defense against the elements, rodents, insects, and so much more, so this isn’t a decision that should be made quickly.

Finding the Right Roof For Your Home

METAL ROOFS

Over the past few years, metal roofs have exploded in popularity. As their name suggests, they’re made from metal (typically steel, aluminum, or copper) and sometimes have a metallic coating to prevent rust.

And while they may be made of metal, our roofs never look like silver metal sheets sitting on top of your house. When it comes to shapes, sizes, colors, and finishes, you have a myriad of options to choose from.

Metal Roofs: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Longevity. Arguably the greatest benefit of metal roofs is that they’re incredibly durable and have a far longer lifespan than other alternatives.
  • Energy efficiency. It’s a common myth that metal roofs attract the sun and will therefore make your home hotter. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Metal roofs are actually very energy-efficient because they deflect the sun’s rays, not attract them.
  • Environmentally-friendly. Because they consist of at least 25 percent recycled materials and can be recyclable themselves, metal roofs are one of the most sustainable options.

Cons

  • Cost. On average, a metal roof will typically be more expensive than other alternatives, since the materials used are stronger, more durable, and will last longer.
  • Consumer education. Lots of myths surround metal roofs, like they’re noisy during heavy rainfall, attract lightning, or don’t fit in with the aesthetics of a home or neighborhood. Despite these all being untrue, some people instantly dismiss the idea of getting a metal roof.

ASPHALT ROOFS

Asphalt roofs are very popular. In fact, they’re the most common type of roof you’ll see when driving through any town or neighborhood. There are three types of asphalt shingles on the market today: 3-tab, dimensional, and luxury.

Asphalt Roofs: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • More cost-effective. The average asphalt roof is going to be more cost-effective than a metal roof because the building materials are less expensive. Metal roofs also require more skill and labor to install.
  • Design and style versatility. Asphalt shingles have been around for many years, so there’s no shortage of styles, textures, designs, and colors to choose from.
  • Ease of installation. Asphalt shingles are relatively simple to install, which cuts down on cost and installation time.

Cons

  • Lifespan. Asphalt roofs tend to last between 15 and 20 years. This is a stark contrast to metal roofs, which can last for several decades.
  • Roof maintenance. Every type of roof requires general maintenance at some point, however, asphalt roofs need a bit more than metal. Asphalt roofs should be inspected and maintained roughly once a year.
