The Importance of Good Roof Ventilation

Poor attic ventilation can pose a variety of problems, most of which spawn from excessive moisture that can aid in the development of mold growth. 
 

• Ventilation is the process of providing a continuous supply of air through the attic space
• 50% intake / 50% exhaust
• Exhaust must be at least 3 feet higher than the intake system
• Most intakes are under the eaves except for Smartvent® applications

IS YOUR ROOF SUFFOCATING FROM POOR VENTILATION?

BLACK MOLD/MILDEW

Black mold in the attic is a sure sign of poor ventilation which causes excessive moisture build up. In this case, insulation in the soffit area (air intake) has caused this attic to suffocate and not breath properly. 

As a part of our 16pt inspection, we take every precaution to ensure the attic will ventilate properly with every new rood we install.

WATER STAINED CEILING AND/OR WALLS

Water stains on the ceiling or walls doesn’t necessarily mean you have a roof that’s leaking. This can also happen from excessive moisture buildup in the attic. In extreme cases, the ceilings can literally rain inside your home from condensation of a poorly ventilated attic.

THE BACON ROOF

Curling shingles can resemble bacon in a frying pan, and are created in much the same way. Extreme heat from a poorly ventilated attic causes the shingles to “bake”, curling the edges which compromises the integrity of the shingle. At this point, it is best to replace the entire roof and take any necessary steps to ensure the attic is properly ventilated.
