They have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years while 3-tab shingles have a lifespan closer to 10 to 15 years. Architectural shingles are also called "dimensional shingles" because they provide a more layered and aesthetically interesting look. They can even be engineered to imitate the styles of other roofing materials like wood shakes or slate. In terms of value, they are more expensive than 3-tab shingles, but they come with better warranties, last longer, and are often easier to install.

Can You Install Architectural Shingles Over 3-Tab?

This is a tricky question. The technical answer is yes. But most roofers are going to recommend that you perform a tear off. One reason for this is that old shingles can prevent new shingles from laying flat. This can make a roof more vulnerable to leaks if the architectural shingles aren't adhering correctly to the roof. The waves or bumps that can result are also unsightly and could harm your curb appeal. There are also other reasons to be cautious about performing an overlay like voiding your warranty and shortening the shingles lifespan due to heat buildup.
